Eifelsteig Trail – Our Hiking Experience

The path is well marked with the familiar logo. It’s a premium hiking trail.
The transport connections in this region are not entirely unproblematic. Plan your arrival and departure in advance. You can find detailed information on this topic in our hiking report.
You need a good level of fitness. The path is relatively well developed with smaller, narrow passages.
As always, some cash can be very useful on the go. We also often paid by card.
On the stages you come regularly through towns. Here you can eat as needed.
Hiking with a tent and self-sufficiency was possible for us. You can take part in the “Trekking Network Eifel” funding project in the North Eifel and get organized campsites through it. There were numerous beautiful hiking huts on stages 9 to 12. In some places, “wild camping” is expressly prohibited.e expressly pointed out that camping in the national park is prohibited. It is important to us: We leave the bivouac as we found it!
The route takes you through the Eifel National Park with its beautiful, varied landscape. It wasn’t crowded.
Good, sturdy hiking boots are sufficient. Climbing equipment is not required. Good rain protection can help in the Eifel.

Our stages

9 Hillesheim to Geroldstein, 20km
10 Geroldstein to Daun, 24km
11 Daun to Manderscheid, 23km
12 Manderscheid to Kloster Himmerod, 18km

The Eifelsteig on its 313 km is officially divided into 15 stages. These daily stages between 15 and 28 km lead from Aachen (North Rhine-Westphalia) to Trier (Rhineland-Palatinate). This premium trail is one of the most beautiful long-distance hiking trails in Germany. The path is characterized in particular by a varied, natural route with a high proportion of earthy paths, magnificent views and a large number of changes in formation.

Volcanic landscape

The trail crosses impressive natural areas of the Eifel such as the high moor landscape of the Hohe Venn, the Eifel National Park and the Vulkaneifel European Geopark. Past the witnesses of the volcanic past of the Eifel in the Vulkaneifel to the striking red sandstone cliffs above Trier.
