Hiking and Photography: The Ultimate Gear Guide

What is the best three-camera setup?

A great camera for hiking is your loyal companion, capturing the beauty of landscapes, the vastness of mountains, and fleeting moments. Long-distance hiking isn’t just a sport; it’s a chance to enjoy nature and create unforgettable memories. But which camera is right for your adventures? Let’s take a look together.

Being out in the wilderness, experiencing nature firsthand, and capturing breathtaking landscapes is the dream of many long-distance hikers and adventurers. But which camera or photo equipment is best suited for these epic journeys? In this article, I’ll share our experiences and provide practical tips for choosing the perfect camera for trekking and hiking.

The perfect camera for hiking:

  1. Compact cameras: These small and lightweight cameras are ideal companions for hikers. They easily slip into your pocket or backpack, without sacrificing image quality. When choosing a compact camera, opt for models with a sturdy build to withstand the rigors of the trail. However, be aware that their feature set might be more limited compared to larger camera systems.
  2. Mirrorless cameras offer the flexibility of interchangeable lenses without the weight of a DSLR. They are compact, powerful, and well-suited for hiking. Look for weather-sealed models to withstand rain and dust. We use the Panasonic GH5, which we will discuss in more detail below.
  3. Action cameras: If you love action-packed hiking or mountain climbing, action cameras like the GoPro are a great choice. They are small, lightweight and shockproof. You can attach them to your backpack or hold them in your hand to take stunning videos and photos. We always have these with us, currently the 11 version.
  4. Smartphone cameras: Don’t forget your smartphone! Modern smartphones have powerful cameras that are perfect for spontaneous snapshots on the go. Use apps for manual settings and editing to get the best out of your photos.

The ideal camera for hiking should meet the following criteria:

  • Weight and size: Make sure the camera is not too heavy so that you can carry it comfortably.
  • Robust: Your camera must be able to withstand the elements. A robust housing that is protected against splashes, dust and impacts is a must. The lenses should also be durable. After all, you want to be able to rely on your equipment when you are out in the wild.
  • Battery life: Multi-day hikes require a powerful battery. Make sure your camera uses energy efficiently. You can influence battery life by turning off the monitor or using the power saving mode.
  • Weatherproof: Think about the weather! A weatherproof camera is a must if you are going to be outdoors for long periods of time.

Weight and carrying options

The weight of your photography equipment will significantly impact your hiking experience. Here are some tips to minimize weight and carry your cameras comfortably:

  • Hip belt attachment: For my Panasonic GH5, attaching it to the hip belt in a suitable camera bag is a great solution. In addition, a small carabiner attached to the backpack strap supports the stability of the carry. This distributes the weight evenly and you always have the camera to hand.
  • Chest strap: I often use the chest strap for my action camera. I always leave the flexible tripod mounted so I am flexible and ready for action quickly. Also helpful for vlogging.
  • Camera straps: Invest in comfortable camera straps that distribute the weight well. If your tent is set up and you can wander around without a load, such a strap is a good addition. However, we often leave it at home because otherwise it adds a few grams.

Protection from the weather

While hiking, you are exposed to the elements. Here are some ways to protect your cameras:

  • Rain protection: Use waterproof camera bags or rain covers to protect your equipment from getting wet.
  • Dust and sand: Keep your camera in a dust and sand proof bag when hiking in dry areas.
  • Temperature fluctuations: Extreme temperatures can affect battery life. Keep your camera warm in cold weather and avoid direct sunlight. Remove the battery from the cameras in the evening and store everything in your sleeping bag.
